Superior Court got under way Monday morning- with Judge Don Phillips charging the Grand Jury in which he outlined the duties and some of the customs of courts we in herited from the English system. This is Judge Phillips’ first visit in about five years. In the mean time he has served as a judge in the war crimes cases in Germany. Among the distinguished lawyers in court Monday were Congress man Woodrow Jones of this district and Congressman Monroe Redden of the 12th district from Hender «ville .... Mayor Burlev Johnson of Columbus, who won the television set at the square dance in Columbus Saturday donat ed it back to the Volunteer Fire Department to help them pay for their building. Anyone wishing to show their appreciation of the sac rifices made by volunteer firemen and the need for fire protection in Folnmbus have an opportunity to send a donation direct. This will save a lot of work in giving danc es sunners and entertainments . . . The Wall Street Journal is now in the Reading Room of the Lanier -Continued on Back Page_ Methodist Pastor Leaves Rev. and Mrs. Paul F. Davis left Monday for their new home at Dallas, Oregon, where Mr. Davis will teach English and So cial Studies in the high school. Mr. Davis surprised his congre gation with the announcement Sun day morning at the Tryon Metho dist Church which he has served since the last Conference in Oc tober. Mr. Davis in addition to his divinity degree from Emory Uni versity also holds a degree in edu cation from the Missouri State Teachers College at Springfield, Mo. In order for him to accept his new position in Oregon in time to be ready for the new school year, it was necessary to leave Trvon immediately. He will be succeeded in Tryon as ad interim pastor by the Rev. Harold A. Pruyn of Duke Univer sity Divinity School, who will ar rive this week-end and preach next Sunday morning. The Con ference will meet again in October to name a new permanent pastor. Mr. Pruyn has a wife but no children. BITY IN TRYON HILLS Col. William Mikelson of Ar lington and Maj. 0. W. Nettles of Summerville, S. C., hp.ve bought homesifces in Tryon Hills and plan to build homes in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. John McGuinn are completing a home on New Mar ket Road. New patients at St. Luke’s Hos pital include Mrs. Alex Payton, New Greenwich, Conn. Patients discharged include Mrs. Frank Johnson and baby girl of Mill Spring.
